How do you clean fine jewelry? A short guide.

Jewelry can harbor so much dirt coming from dead skin cells, sweat, body oils, makeup, lotions, perfumes... you know it.

All these agents combined make your gold and gemstones look dull and lifeless, as well as harboring bacteria.

How do you clean fine jewelry?

Watch this video where we detail the two main methods:

There are 2 ways - depending on what you're cleaning.

First method, the one your jeweler uses, is an ultrasonic cleaner. Second method, a bowl, a toothbrush, and good old soap and water.

You can buy an ultrasonic cleaners for an affordable price online, just make sure the frequency is between 40.000 and 80.000 Hz.

Anyhing solid gold and silver is safe to clean in ultrasonic. If the jewelry has stones, as always we refer back to the Mohs scale.

Diamonds, sapphires, amethyst, peridot, topaz, hard stones like that are fine.

Softer stones, such as turquoise, malachite, lapis, opals or pearls should not be cleaned in these machines.

But that's not all. Oil treated or resin treated gemstones like most emeralds, rubies, and spinels, should also not be cleaned in ultrasonic, you want to be extra gentle to not compromise that coating.

For those, just soak them in warm water and dish soap for a minute, grab a toothbrush with soft bristles, and brush gently to remove all the dirt, creams, body oils. Then, just gently dab it dry with a lint-free cloth to make sure you leave no watermarks.

And of course, this method is perfectly fine for all kids of jewelry if you don't have one of these.

See how to in this video:

For optimal shine and longevity of your gold jewelry, here's the jeweler's routine:

1. Regular cleaning: wash your jewelry with a soft toothbrush, warm water and dish soap, at least every 2 weeks (or as needed depending on usage)

2. Deep cleaning: clean your jewelry in a domestic-use ultrasonic cleaner filled with warm water and a teaspoon of dish soap, once a month (or as needed depending on usage).

If you don't have one, take your jewelry to your local jeweler or goldsmith once every 6 months to a year for professional grade cleaning.
